Family Days Out

  • MacDonald Cardrona Hotel
  • Children's Event at the Eastgate
  • Cocoa Black
  • Tweed Green, Peebles

Peebles is a little jewel of a town renowned for its wonderful high street packed with independent shops…but it has so much more to discover.

In January the town was officially named the most creative place of its size in the country and presented with a Creative Place award from Creative Scotland plus £100,000 to spend on festivals, events and arts commissions throughout the year.

This is an outline guide to just some of the things an active family of 4 could enjoy during a long weekend visit to Peebles.

Arrive Friday morning and book into your double glazed, heated “Leisure Lodge” at Crossburn Caravan Park (£40 per night for 4) or perhaps splash out on a luxurious Executive Family Room at the MacDonald Cardrona Hotel (approx. £394 for 3 nights in July) or choose a B&B or hotel priced somewhere in between. Head into Peebles for a late breakfast at one of the small cafes or hotels.

Fuelled up, you can head down to Glentress Forest where there are a range of walks, and some of the best mountain bike trails in the country. Back into Peebles and (if you are at the campsite) visit the award-winning Forsyth’s baker and butcher and pick up some very tasty supplies or (if you are at the hotel) wander along the High Street for some quality shopping.

In the evening you can drop into the Eastgate Theatre to see the premiere of The Carousel, a new play by Stellar Quines Theatre Company.

Saturday – after breakfast head to the Tweed where you have a date for a morning of salmon fishing on one of the best salmon rivers in the country.  Into town for a takeaway picnic lunch then, if it is the weekend of the 26 July, head down to the riverside at Tweed Green to eat while you enjoy Airs & Gracenotes -  a huge free afternoon concert by the best local bands.

Back to base for dinner and relax for the evening.

Sunday - Head back to Glentress for a half day of mountain bike riding coaching for the whole family with Ridelines (£110). Clean up then head out to the Tontine Hotel for a traditional afternoon tea or Cocoa Black - home to UK World Chocolate Master and UK Confectioner of the Year, Ruth Hinks, - and indulge in some freshly prepared luxury handmade Chocolate, Cake and Patisserie.

Finally join around 50 others at the “Lovely Barn” candlelit house party (Entry by donation).
