It’s not every day that you get to create your own flavour of ice cream and then have it go on sale to the general public at an award-winning ice cream parlour. But that’s exactly what happened to 12-year-old Molly Turnbull from Galashiels whose creation, Vimto Delight, won a Borders-wide competition to develop a new flavour of ice cream to celebrate the Imaginarium festival held at the Eastgate Theatre during the October school holiday.
Molly’s ice cream has been on sale at Caldwell’s Homemade Ice Cream in Peebles High Street for the past week – and may remain on sale for a while yet. “It’s so good we are thinking about keeping it in the range for long after the festival,” commented Jan Caldwell from Caldwell’s Ice Cream.
Tasting her ice cream for the first time, with a camera crew from ITV Borders recording the moment, Molly seemed delighted with her creation. “It’s even better than I imagined,” she smiled. All those who had gathered for the announcement of the winning entry had to agree.
In total, the competition saw 45 entries from young people across the Borders, with Maisie Cowan (12), also from Galashiels, the runner up with her Coconut, Raspberry and Orio recipe. Third place went to Neve Reed (8), from Peebles, for her Jelly Sweet Delight recipe.
