Keen to escape the city for a few days and recharge your batteries? For Edinburgh residents, the answer is just 30 minutes’ drive south where a world of tranquil luxury awaits your pleasure. Here are just a few suggestions for how to concoct the ultimate high-end weekend break in and around Peebles:
Friday evening: Check in to the sumptuous Bonnington Suite (£120 per night for two people) at gorgeous Kingsmuir House, just a few minutes’ walk from the centre of Peebles. Combining classic Victorian features with crisp, modern design, you decide to take some time out before heading for Peebles’ historic High Street where you can enjoy dinner in your choice of award-winning restaurants, including The Sunflower (Tripadvisor Certificate of Excellence) or Coltman’s Restaurant, which offers glorious, locally-produced food and beautiful views.
And if visiting in October, head to the Eastgate Theatre for a night of adventure with acclaimed BBC wildlife cameraman and TV star Gordon Buchanan as he presents Lost Adventures (10 Oct). An evening stroll along the banks of the Tweed takes you back to your accommodation.
Saturday: After a ridiculously good breakfast at Kingsmuir House, you could head for a morning of fly fishing on the Tweed, with expert instruction and guiding from Fish Wild – the perfect way to make the most of your time on one of Scotland’s most celebrated rivers. Fish Wild also offers flexible packages, including lunch and travel.
But if waders and water are a bit of a stretch, why not choose instead a day of pampering at one of Scotland’s most famous health spas? Nearby Stobo Castle offers every imaginable treatment in the most picturesque of settings. Perhaps begin with a session of aromatherapy, reflexology or an Indian head massage, before making use of the rest of the health spa’s extensive facilities – including a wonderful pool with incredible views. Suitably rejuvenated, enjoy a delicious three-course lunch before your afternoon treatment, or perhaps even an exercise class before heading back to Peebles. Full-day packages at Stobo (including two treatments and lunch) start at £109 per person.
After a quick change and dinner at Kingsmuir House, take a gentle dip back into culture with a visit to the Eastgate Theatre. On Saturday, 4 Oct, the wonderful Karine Polwart will be playing some of the finest folk music around, including a range of tracks from her 2012 album, Traces.
Sunday: Check out of Kingsmuir House in the morning, but before heading back to Edinburgh, be sure to drop into Kailzie Gardens for a stroll around one of the country’s most inspiring gardens. Lunch at the Restaurant at Kailzie Gardens is also not to be missed. One of only a handful of eateries to receive the prestigious Michelin Bib Gourmand award, the Restaurant is housed in a stunning 19th century stable block set in a delightful courtyard. The menu leans heavily on top-quality, locally-sourced produce, but look out too for a range of Scandinavian-inspired smorrebrod (open sandwiches).
You can then point your car north and head back to the city relaxed and raring to go after a very special weekend.
